CPD: Cyber Crime Seminar

The Branch is happy to announce that North Yorkshire Law is hosting a morning session at Woodend in Scarborough. The session will be around cyber crime, with guest speaker Detective Sergeant Shelton Newsham, the regional prevent and protect lead for the Yorkshire and Humber regional cyber crime unit.

This event is free to all Scarborough Branch Members.

Cocktail Making Night

CILEx National Awards 2019

The CILEx National Awards were launched in 2018, the celebrate the exceptional talent, innovation and achievement of CILEx members, supporters and stakeholders.

We are delighted to announce that this year's host will be Claudia Winkleman, one of the best-known broadcasters in the UK, who regularly fronts the live television shows for both Red Nose Day and Sport Relief, as well as her regular hosting of Strictly Come Dancing.

The CILEx National Awards showcase and celebrate the excellent work, and achievements, of CILEx members, supporters and stakeholder partners.

These exclusive awards recognise individuals, organisations and teams that are providing exemplary service, advice and support to those seeking access to justice. Celebrating the innovative recruitment and professional development practice that are widening access to a career in the legal profession to a more diverse audience.

CILEx has been celebrating the achievements of its members, as well as their employers and partners for many years. We are proud to formally celebrate what we have always known: that we support and represent a wealth of talented people and organisations. We will be acknowledging those who are leading the way in an ever changing, forward thinking, professional legal services sector and whose work closely aligns to our mission, our vision and our values.

Tickets to this prestigious event, that provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate the exceptional talent, innovation and achievement of CILEx members, supporters and stakeholders are now on sale.

Held at Madame Tussauds and hosted by Claudia Winkleman, this is set to be a night to remember - early booking is advisable!

The evening commences at 7:00 pm with a drinks reception and the opportunity to experience the Spirit of London ride, which provides an exciting journey through the capital's history. Dinner will be called at 8:00 pm, with speeches, the awards and entertainment to follow. The evening will draw to a close at Midnight. All-inclusive ticket price includes attendance at the CILEx National Awards, Spirit of London ride, three course meal, wine, beer and soft drinks.

CPD Event: Dementia Friends

On 21 May 2019, the Branch held a Dementia Friends session at North Yorkshire Law in Scarborough. Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways that we can help. A Dementia Friend is somebody who learns about dementia so they can help their community. There was strong support for the session, and we thank everyone who came.

On Wednesday, 10 April 2019, the Branch held a training session at Thorpe & Co in Scarborough. The session was kindly provided by Dere Street Barristers and involved an ancillary relief update.

Social Event

The Scarborough Branch held a social event at Betton Farm in East Ayton on Thursday, 4 April 2019. This was to get to know more about our chosen charity of the year, Basics Plus at Betton Farm, and included a tour of the facilities and a buffet.

It was really great to hear about the great work that they are doing and to socialise and eat in such lovely surroundings.

Annual General Meeting

On 19 February 2019, the Branch held the Annual General Meeting at the officers of Thorpe & Co in Scarborough. We are happy to announce the following appointments and reappointments:

On 15 January 2019, the Branch held a training session on Section 14 TOLATA, kindly delivered by Nicholas Mason of New Park Court Chambers.

Christmas Do: A Murder Mystery Evening at the Royal Hotel

On Thursday, 6 December 2018, the Scarborough CILEx Branch held its Christmas Do, A Murder Mystery Evening at the Royal Hotel.

The event was a great success and included a raffle for a Christmas hamper, with all proceeds going to the Branch's nominated charity, SALT. We are delighted to say that we raised £262 for the charity, with Branch member Paul Barker winning the hamper!

CPD Event: Contentious Probate

On 4 December 2018, at the offices of Thorpe & Co, the Scarborough Branch held a training session by Ashley Tucker of New Park Court Chambers on "Contentious Probate". Nineteen delegates were in attendance.

CPD Event: PSG presents Transparency Regulations

On Wednesday, 28 November 2018, the Scarborough Branch and Scarborough Law Society held a Transparency Regulations seminar, presented by PSG.

The session covered:

  • The background to the new rules on transparency
  • The forthcoming regulatory changes
  • The importance of fees and service transparency within the legal provision industry
  • The Brighter Estimate solution

The Scarborough Branch provided divorce and financial training to LLB students from the University of Coventry.

On 30 July and 6 August, the Scarborough Branch provided Child Law training to LLB students from the University of Coventry.

On 23 July 2018, Carol Sherwood of the Scarborough Branch delivered training on Public Child Law at the offices of Pinkney Grunwells in Scarborough.

On 16 July 2018, the Scarborough Branch delivered training on domestic abuse to the University of Coventry's LLB students.

CPD Event: Conveyancing Training Delivered by PSG, TerraFirma and Landmark

On 11 July 2018, at the offices of Thorpe & Co in Scarborough, the Scarborough Branch hosted a Conveyancing CPD event and had three speakers deliver presentations to members. PSG, a nationally recognised branch and market leader in search provision, spoke about "Transparency of Fees". Terrafirma, who are changing the way professionals identify, assess, manage and resolve the risks the ground poses, delivered a presentation entitled "Do You Really Know What's Below Your Property". Finally, Landmark - the go-to experts in land and property - spoke on "Guide You Through 'Which Report'".

LawCare Presentation - Why Good Mental Health and Resilience Matters

The Scarborough Branch held a CPD event on 22 May at Thorpe & Co Solicitors. The event was held in association with LawCare, and Ann Charlton delivered an excellent presentation about mental health and resilience. 16 delegates attended this event and this is some of the feedback we received:

CPD Event - GDPR and AML

The Scarborough Branch held a CPD event with PSG delivering presentations focusing on anti-money laundering and the new GDPR. The event was held in association with the Scarborough Law Society and took place on 3 May. 27 delegates attended the event and this is some of the feedback we received:

Branch AGM

The Scarborough branch held their AGM on Tuesday 20 February 2018. At this time, they appointed the new Committee for the coming year, with Anita Cooper appointed as Chair.

Helen Winter is stepping down as Chair after 3 years and the Committee would like to thank her for all her work and support throughout that time.

Branch Christmas Meal

On Thursday, 7 December the branch held its annual Christmas meal at Lazenbys in Scarborough. With so many attending it was a great opportunity to catch up with each other whilst enjoying some fantastic food and drink!

Scarborough CILEx Christmas Soiree

On 19 December 2017 the branch held its first Christmas Soiree. There were drinks and nibbles to be enjoyed and also a Christmas Raffle in aid of The Rainbow Centre, Scarborough. A fantastic £277 was raised from raffle ticket sales and a lovely evening was had by all. CILEx Manchester BranchThe branch recently held a Temple Spa Beauty Class at the offices of Thorpe & Co Solicitors.  The event was well attended and a raffle to raise funds for charity was also held on the evening.  The proceeds of the raffle and any commission from products sold were all donated to the branches nominated charity, The Rainbow Centre.  £150 in total was raised!

The branch would like to thank Emily Bielby, their local Temple Spa representative.
