This year has seen a blossoming relationship between Lancashire CILEx Branch and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN). UCLAN hosted the Branch's Charity Seminar in March, following which the Branch were invited to be guests of the Chair at the Preston Incorporated Law Society Ball, which new Chair Sarah Sharples attended to represent the Branch. Sarah sat at the top table and also had a top night! Thank you PILS and Jane Anthony for the invitation!
Lancashire CILEx Branch are happy to announce that we now have an Instagram account! Follow cilexlancashire to keep up to date with all the latest happenings!
Having said goodbyes to former members (who had been with us for some time) Carina Gallagher and Claire Blundell who have had to leave us, following moves to different parts of the country for work, we now say a sad goodbye to a newer member, Navaid Syed. Most of you may not know that Navaid played a crucial role in his short time with the Branch, by nominating former Branch Chair Nick Williams in the Visionary Leadership Category, where he finds himself in the final of this year's Awards. Navaid is also leaving for work (maybe we need more Chartered Legal Exec roles in Lancashire!), although clearly his short time with the Branch was impactful. We hope he leaves with good memories, and we wish him well.

We are pleased to report that Lancashire Branch was a finalist for the Branch of the Year Award 2018. Unfortunately, we came second place on the night but we are proud of everything we have achieved and are excited to go for the crown next year.
Work-based Learning Session
On 24 October 2019 the Branch held a Work-based Learning session at Napthens Solicitors, our original venue sponsors, in Preston. Our course leader was our Committee Member Andy Moore, with Head Office calling in to support with answering questions. Andy had just been through the process and was very knowledgeable.
This very popular and well-attended event was held as a free event for members and non-members (to subsequently engage them into the Branch). The purpose of this event was to go through the Work-based Learning Process to that CILEx Members who are studying or have just completed studying are aware of the next steps in qualifying.

1st Charity Seminar: Growing with CILEx
On Thursday, 7 March 2019 the Branch held its first Charity Seminar: Growing with CILEx. This was a milestone event for the Branch, involving networking, partner stands in the foyer and four different speakers, held at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) and sponsored by UCLAN and Simply Law Jobs. Matt Foster, the CILEx Vice-President, addressed the room and hosted a Q&A session along with CILEx Professional Board Member Rachel Stevens and CILEx Head of Business Development Lynne Squires. Chris Williams, a LinkedIn influencer and the founder of Doddle, spoke about growing your online media profile. Simon McCrum, a law firm management consultant, spoke about growing your legal business. Malcolm Rae (OBE, FRCN) and Danny Sculthorpe, former England rugby league captain, spoke about mental health awareness and growing your own resilience.
The event was in aid of the CILEx Benevolent Fund, State of Mind Sport and Belfast Children's Hospital.
It was an incredible event, drawing a large crowd, and the Branch thanks everyone who attended, as well as our sponsors UCLAN and Simply Law Jobs and all of our great speakers.
CPD Event: Family Law and Civil Litigation
On 14 November 2018, the Branch held a CPD Event at Deans Court Chambers in Preston. The CPD Event involved talks by two Barristers, one on Family Law and the other on Civil Litigation. Both talks were an update on Case Management in the respective areas.
We are grateful to the very knowledgeable and friendly barristers, who have accommodated us and hosted us previously.
CPD Event: Malcolm Rae, OBE and Ian Smith from State of Mind Sport
On 1 November, Lancashire CILEx Branch held a CPD event at Napthens Solicitors in Preston, to tie into World Mental Health Day. Malcolm Rae, OBE and former Rugby League referee Ian Smith of State of Mind Sport gave a powerful talk on Building Health Wellbeing and Resilience in the Workplace. The talk was extremely well-received; we would definitely recommend!
CPD Event: Ann Charlton from LawCare
On 30 September, Lancashire CILEx Branch held a CPD event at Napthens Solicitors, our original sponsors, in Preston. Ann Charlton from LawCare gave a talk about mental health and well-being. She was very knowledgeable, very well received and very personable; we would definitely recommend her! The attendees were also delighted to receive a short talk from Ian Hunt, of East Devon Law.
Work-Based Learning Event
On 25 July, Lancashire CILEx Branch provided its members with a free, specially arranged Work-Based Learning (WBL) event at our original sponsors, Napthens Solicitors in Preston.
Our very own Branch members Andrew Moore, Head of Legal Services at CEL Solicitors and Amy Kirk, Senior Fee Earner at Fletchers Solicitors, presented a specially arranged Work-Based Learning Event for our sellout audience.
This event served to help members to understand how to build a portfolio and included a video, along with experience sharing. Additionally, CILEx HR's Membership Manager, Louise Tyrrell, attended by phone to answer questions and provide further information.
Branch Meeting and Talk from Patricia M. White
On Thursday, 5 July 2018 the Branch held a meeting at Napthens Solicitors. Due to his increasing work commitments, Ron Heywood is stepping down from his role as Media Officer and there is now an opportunity for a Branch Member to take up this post. This would be a great opportunity to hold a hands-on (but not too time-consuming) role in the Branch, including gaining / improving additional skills for your CV! Anyone who is interested in having a chat about this role should contact the Branch by email.
The Branch is delighted to welcome Amy Kirk to the Committee. The need for a Branch Events Officer was raised, as the number of events is growing as the Branch grows in size and the Branch requires someone to support these events. Amy put herself forward as the Events Officer and will be supported by the Chair and the wider Branch Committee.
The meeting included a talk from Patricia M. White (FCILEx), one of the first Chartered Legal Executives to set up her own law firm. Patricia attended from Yorkshire and gave a very interesting and informative talk, including her background, work history and how she came to be (and what it takes to be) a CILEx Litigator Advocate. Patricia engaged and enthused the audience and was encouraging, insightful, motivating, knowledgeable and friendly. We would definitely recommend!
Preston Legal Walk
On Monday, 4 June 2018 the Lancashire Branch participated in the Preston Legal Walk, a 10 km after work sponsored walk to raise funds for free legal advice charities in Preston and around the North West. This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their work and help the vulnerable people they support.
The Branch is delighted to announce that we raised a total of £262.00 for the North West Legal Support Trust!
Branch Meeting and CPD Event - Fraud
CILEx Lancashire Branch held another of its bi-monthly meetings on Thursday, 3 May 2018 at Napthens Solicitors in Preston. With regards to the speaker, we were disappointed... disappointed that we did not know about Peter Taylor MIAATI earlier!
Peter gave a talk on fraud and business fraud and brought a dynamic, engaging and enthusiastic approach; if it hadn't been for the limited time we had this meeting could have lasted hours for us!
An engaging speaker and interactive workshop already has us looking at when we can have 'The Fraud Guy' return. His stories had us hooked, but we think the Branch only experienced the tip of the iceberg with regards to what Peter could teach us about fraud... speaking of icebergs, it got us wondering if the Titanic did really hit that iceberg or if there was an element of fraud (we've checked and it seems legitimate).
If anyone is considering booking Peter to give your business a talk (or even if you're not considering it)... book him.
You will not be disappointed! Thank you Fraud Guy!
Branch Meeting and CPD Event - Landlord & Tenant / Civil Litigation talk with 18 St John Street Chambers (www.18sjs.com)
We held this event at Napthens Solicitors, our original sponsors, in Preston.
Our guest speakers were Mr Michael Wilkinson, Miss Victoria Empson and Mr Oliver Caplan from 18 St John Street Chambers, Manchester.
The interesting topics, engaging speakers and willingness of the attendees to learn and ask questions all contributed to this being a successful event.
Branch Meeting and CPD Event - GDPR
With the Branch recognising that members cannot always travel to Preston for 6pm on a Thursday evening we resolved to adapt to our members' needs by #Branchingout.
Accordingly, our meeting on 15 March was held at Worthington Marcus & Co in Claughton on Brock. This included a visit from Brian Rogers of Riliance Group Limited who gave an excellent talk in respect of GDPR and the imminent changes in respect of Data. CILEx's new Branch Officer Chris Bjerregaard was also in attendance to see our branch in operation and to answer questions.
Annual General Meeting
Branch members attended the AGM on Thrsday, 1 February 2018 when President of CILEx Millicent Grant also visited our Branch. It was a successful evening with branch committee elections taking place. The current elected officers can be found on the 'Committee' tab.
