Walk-the-Thames Charity Walk 2019
On Saturday, 19 October 2019, the Branch took part in Walk-the-Thames 2019. The team included Lora Clark, Jack Armitstead, Holly Davis, Rachel Davis and Mark Seabrook.
We walked to raise funds for the London Legal Support Trust, which funds Law Centres and pro bono agencies in and around London. The funds we raised will support the development of a Law Centre service in Surrey, where there is no specialist social welfare legal service at present for poor and vulnerable residents. The recession has added to the number of people needing free legal help with housing, benefits, debt and employment matters. At the same time, funding has been reduced, leaving the agencies very short of the resources to help even the most vulnerable people.
The walk was a half marathon and was cold and sometimes wet, but always for a good cause.
Careers Visit at Blenheim School
On Friday, 14 June 2019, the Branch attended a Careers Day at Blenheim School in Epsom. This annual careers event includes many different exhibitors, including universities, colleges, recruitment organisations, the Armed Forces, Navy, RAF, NHS, as well as private firms and companies. The school looked after all the exhibitors very well, with refreshments throughout the day and a lovely lunch prepared by the school cooks. The event is well attended by students who are inquisitive and quite well informed about the legal profession, whether from watching legal drams such as 'Suits' and some having lawyers in their families.
It was a very productive day, with students eager to take literature about CILEx and hear more about the CILEx route.
The Guildford and District Branch held their Annual General Meeting at the Three Pigeons Pub in Guildford on 20 February. It was a great opportunity to catch up with existing members, meet new contacts and share ideas on how to best develop and promote the Branch.
